Subforum: Technological Innovations and Low-Carbon Transformation
I. About the Forum
The Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGEFP) at China Agricultural University, in partnership with CGIAR, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the World Resources Institute, will co-host the subforum during the 2024 WAFI on the morning of October 9. Key platforms supporting this event include CGIAR's Mitigate+ Initiative on Low-Emission Food Systems, the International Forum of Low-Emission Agrifood Systems(IFLEAS), and the Yangtze River Delta Alliance of Zero-Carbon Smart Villages.
As global warming accelerates, agrifood systems and rural development face increasingly severe challenges, as these sectors are both highly vulnerable to climate change and important sources of greenhouse gas emissions. How to strike a balance between increasing food production, protecting the environment, and raising farmers' incomes has become crucial for sustainable development.
Technological innovations are emerging as a key driver of transformation in these sectors. Innovations such as precision agriculture, smart logistics, and modern supply chain management can enhance productivity, reduce input use, and minimize waste, ultimately lowering emissions. In rural areas, technological innovations enable efficient energy use, renewable energy development, and comprehensive improvements in quality of life, employment, and ecological health, thereby promoting low-carbon development.
This subforum will bring together scholars, entrepreneurs, policymakers and practitioners from various fields to discuss the role and pathways of technological innovations in promoting the transformation of agrifood systems and low-carbon development in rural areas. By sharing cutting-edge research findings and case studies, participants will provide options for achieving sustainable agrifood systems and rural development.
The subforum will feature keynote speeches and two roundtable discussions. The first roundtable discussion will address how technological innovations can empower the transformation of agrifood systems and low-carbon development in rural areas, while the second roundtable discussion will focus on practical applications and case studies related to these transformations. Each speaker will have 5-7 minutes to share their insights.
