Global food security and nutrition are threatened by multiple risks, including climate change, resource degradation, trade frictions, and regional conflicts. The number of people experiencing hunger remains alarmingly high, with many countries and regions confronting challenges such as dietary imbalances and a rising prevalence of overweight and obesity. Traditional agricultural and food production models face significant challenges, necessitating an urgent transition of agrifood systems towards more nutritious, healthy, and environmentally sustainable practices.
The emerging protein industry, encompassing cutting-edge fields such as plant-based proteins, cell-cultured meat, and fermented proteins, is demonstrating significant potential in promoting a healthy and sustainable food supply due to its efficient, environmentally friendly, and nutrient-rich characteristics. These innovations will play a crucial role in addressing climate change and driving the transformation of agrifood systems.
But, the alternative protein industry confronts numerous challenges in technology, market, and policy. From a technological standpoint, key constraints must be resolved to overcome production bottlenecks, enhance production efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize product quality. On the market front, significant issues that need to be address include improving consumer awareness and acceptance, expanding application areas, and optimizing supply chain management and marketing strategies. In term of policy, it is crucial to develop science based policies to support the growth of the alternative protein industry while addressing issues such as outdated regulations and the lack of standards, which are essential for the healthy development of the industry.
This session themed " Alternative Proteins and Agrifood System Transformation" will bring together academies, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers from both domestic and international contexts to discuss latest technological research and development, commercial applications, market expansion, and regulatory policies related to the alternative protein industry. This will promote technological innovation and dissemination, accelerate the transformation of agrifood systems, and collaboratively build a safer, healthier, and more sustainable global food future. The session includes keynote speeches and two panel discussions.
